For millions of us in the online beauty world, a few days ago the makeup rocked OFF THE SHELVES when Jeffree Star went HAM on his SnapChat about Jerrod Blandino (AKA original owner of Too Faced Cosmetics) shading Tarte Cosmetics over the unicorn craze! Thousands of people watched Jeffree as he showed proof that Too Faced was NOT the creator of unicorn makeup and how Jerrod had bad business practices. He even went as far as to call out Too Faced and the Nikki Tutorials collab and how Nikki was basically ripped off in their deal! Thousands upon thousands of people ran to Jeffree's side and even creators such as Tati Westbrook have publicly boycotted the brand on her channel. I happen to be someone with a different opinion on this drama and I would like to share that as I do not see anyone else seeing this logic.
, First of all, Jeffree is known for his overly dramatic and savage ways in the Beauty Community. He started his SnapChat rant with " Now, I know some people are not going to like this opinion cuz its me and I guess when it involves me, I am not allowed to have an opinion." Well, THIS particular "Drama" DIDN'T involve you, Jeffree. It did not even involve your friends as you also stated that you and Nikki were no longer friends. Also, I believe MOST people feel that way because his actions were a bit hypocritical were they not? Let's think back to the last major creator vs brand scandal which would be Jeffree Star versus Kat Von D when Jeffree commented on Kat's Pastel Goth Palette on Trendmood1's Instagram and hashtagged that her brand was a "mall brand".
So, You will have to excuse me if I find his SnapChat rant stating, " Who's that insecure that they have to post something that shady about another brand?" Hmmm.... Jeffree...I don't know WHO could be that insecure to do such a thing? Right?! #epicfail
Now, just because Jeffree is a bit hypocritical does not mean he is not correct in what he is saying. My issue is that he had no PLACE to say what he said. He could of easily commented on how Too Faced was not right for doing such a thing to Tarte and it would of had the same effect without being as nasty and bringing a ton of others into the drama he was creating. There were probably hundreds of ways he could of gone about this without being hypocritical and dragging others with him but, that is not his style. I guess as a business owner and brand himself, he must be so much better at his business owning skills than everyone else and does not make any mistakes either? Maybe Rocky Roadkill would have a different opinion or the hundreds of others who have had horrible business relations and customer service relations from Jeffree's brand. Who knows.... I personally do not see someone who physically harms their fans, puts down people who support and idolize them, finding hair in products, broken products, bad customer service, racism, stealing art work and soooo much more making him anyone who has the right to out someone for their business mistakes either. Just saying...
As far as the Too Faced and NikkiTutorials Collaboration, I feel this is an ugly back side to business that not a lot of people know or understand. Nikki is a HUGE media star and I am guessing she has a team behind her for legal purposes and to go over contracts and documents etc. So, why are people acting like she is completely innocent and did not know the inner workings of her deal BEFORE she signed that contract? There are alleged things being stated like the formulas that were first produced for Nikki were not the ones actually created and if that is true, she surely has the right to sue? Does she not? Who knows, because the only people who do are Too Faced and Nikki and both are tight lipped. So, I see no reason for people to be assuming that Nikki is the complete victim here. Especially coming from a creator who has no problem showing that her main interest is money. Her only problem with that is actually disclosing sponsors on her channel unless its unavoidable. I am not going to sit here and say that Nikki was not screwed because we all know she probably was. I just find it incredibly hard to believe she did not know about it and has nothing that she can legally do about it. Thank goodness she has her ex friend Jeffree to tell the world though! Right?!
Now, I know a lot of you are probably thinking, "Dang girl, you sure are being quite harsh and Nikki could be completely innocent and Jeffree and Tati could be completely right in their thinking." You're right. That could 100% be the truth, but so could what I am saying and THAT is my point.
One thing I DO know however, is when Tati publicly announced she was boycotting Too Faced, it left a sour taste in my mouth for a very specific reason. Unlike our vocal friend Jeffree, Tati NEVER finds herself in drama or speaking on it of any kind. She usually promotes positivity and kindness and professionalism on her channel. So, why now? I am guessing there will be more and more creators, big and small, jumping on this boycott train now because huge influencers have, but where were these creators when YOU, the consumers, were being scammed or screwed over by these companies? It makes me question if the only reason Too Faced is so easy to "Call Out and Boycott" is because they do not send said influencers on fancy trips and give them thousands of dollars in gifts. It also makes me wonder if this was turned around and it was Tarte or Benefit that did something shady, if these influencers would be as vocal as they are with Too Faced? Where were these creators when Tarte and other brands was shilling out crappy quality products (Limited Edition as well) and taking your money and turning around and sending these influencers on Bora Bora and Necker Island trips and gifting them gifts worth more than some peoples tuition to college? Where were they when companies were calling customers and fellow creators ugly and making fun of them and calling them names for honest reviews? Oh thats right, some were DEFENDING said companies and most were still shilling out their coupon codes for the money! Thats right.... So, if I am seeing this correctly, it is only okay for some creators to be "honest" and "real" when it comes to their friends and money? NOT when it comes to the people who made them who they are? Hmmm....
Please do not get me wrong. I LOVE Tati and think as a creator, she is very honest and a brilliant YouTuber. I do not support Jeffree 50% of the time but also do not completely despise him either. I just truly believe there is a lot to question here and too many people are blindly following something they know nothing about. I want you all to think with your own mind and question things logically. One thing I know from being a YouTube creator myself is that things are NEVER as they seem and so much more happens behind the scenes than you would ever expect. Too Faced is a huge brand that goes back to the 90's and if you think they are the only shady well known brand, you would be wrong! If you think that Tarte or Benefit or any other high end brand doesn't have something in their closets waiting to pop out, you would be very naive. Too Faced sure does have some issues and they are definitely going down hill and no one knows that better than the consumers, but if you are going to boycott a brand over something, have it be for something you 100% know the truth on. Not just a behind the scenes cat fight where you take whoevers side you like the most on. These influencers have no problem saying theres a problem, but refuse to actually tell you what the problem is. They are using their influence to manipulate their viewers and fans into siding with them blindly and I find that wrong.
Jeffree said something about wishing he could expose all the things that happen behind the scenes in the Beauty Community, but why cant he? He states how no one owns him and no one can do anything about the things that he says so, why is he not telling his viewers and fans the real truth about what is going on? Even to a degree where it would not bring him legal trouble? It feels like a whole lot of pot stirring and not enough hard facts and not just about Too Faced but about ALL of the Beauty Community since that is what he referenced. How can someone who spent a lot of time and money false copyrighting videos exposing him and his brand and sending cease and desist orders really be complaining and crying on Twitter alleging that Too Faced is now doing the same to him? How are people not seeing the hypocrisy here? Are only certain people worthy of being boycotted and outed for shady business practices, but they're only worthy if its money from creators and NOT money from consumers?
It could 100% come out in the end that Too Faced and Jerrod are completely horrible and a boycott may be in order. However, I think it is way too early to choose sides so to speak and people need to calm down and just keep their ears and eyes open. Look at everything from a non bias view and you will be surprised the things you start to notice. Look at everything fairly and logically and do not be naive to think these creators are doing any of this for YOU. They're doing this because they have been screwed over financially or in some way personally by Jerrod. Other wise, they would of been by the consumers side fighting hard for all of you when ALL these brands scam and screw consumers over constantly. They would of been vocal and upfront about shady things that happen right when they happen from the start.
Why are we expected to fight for people who would not do the same for us? Think about it.
